The Maldives has introduced new restrictions on tobacco imports under a regulation published in the Government Gazette.

The general regulation on tobacco control, issued by the government, prohibits the import of pre-rolled cigarette and bidi tubes, regardless of whether they contain filters. The ban also extends to empty packaging and other related products.

However, the regulation permits the import of cigarette and bidi rolling paper, provided it is packaged in quantities not exceeding 50 papers per packet. Rolling tobacco imports are also subject to restrictions, with allowed packet sizes ranging from 30 grams to 100 grams.

The regulation specifies minimum packaging requirements for other tobacco products. Cigarettes must be sold in packs containing at least 20 sticks, while bidi must be available in packs of at least 50 sticks. Cigar packs must contain a minimum of five sticks. Rolling tobacco and pipe tobacco must be packaged in quantities between 30 grams and 100 grams. Dried tobacco leaves can be imported in packs ranging from 30 grams to 1,000 grams. Nicotine pouches and similar products must be sold in packs weighing between 15 grams and 100 grams.

Additionally, all tobacco and nicotine products must carry health warnings issued by the Ministry of Health.
