Maldives Sees Surge in Russian Tourists, Second-Largest Source Market in 2024
The Ministry of Tourism has revealed that over 200,000 tourists from Russia have visited the island nation this year, solidifying Russia’s position as the second-largest source market for tourist arrivals.
According to the latest figures, Russian visitors account for 11.2% of total arrivals, with 201,491 tourists recorded so far in 2024. This represents a 6% year-on-year increase compared to 189,541 arrivals during the same period in 2023. Last year, Russian arrivals totalled 209,146 by December, indicating that 2024 may surpass previous records. China remains the leading source market, contributing 248,141 tourists so far this year.
The Maldives has now entered its peak tourism season, bolstered by an increase in international airline flights. Beyond Russia and China, tourist numbers from Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom have also shown growth compared to last year.
Meanwhile, India, which experienced a slowdown in tourist arrivals earlier in 2024, has seen signs of recovery, with 109,651 Indian visitors recorded to date.
Overall, 1,797,028 tourists have visited the Maldives this year, reflecting a 9.2% rise compared to 1,646,327 arrivals during the same period in 2023.
The Maldivian government aims to attract two million tourists by the end of 2024. With 353,673 additional visitors needed to meet this target, the current daily arrival average of 5,756 tourists keeps the goal well within reach.
The Maldives’ tourism sector continues to play a vital role in its economy, and these figures underscore the nation’s enduring appeal as a top global destination.
