Maldives to launch smart ID cards next year, enhancing digital government services

The Maldives is set to roll out smart ID cards integrated with digital identification by next year, as part of a broader effort to digitise government services and streamline access for citizens.

The initiative will enable seamless access to the OneGov platform, a unified government services system that currently integrates 17 agencies and digitises previously manual processes. Around 272,000 individuals, representing 80 per cent of the population over the age of 10, have already been enrolled in the digital ID system.

The move aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision of expanding the digital economy to 15 per cent of GDP by 2030 and achieving developed nation status by 2040.

The government is prioritising three foundational pillars for the initiative: a secure digital ID system, inter-agency data exchange infrastructure, and robust cybersecurity measures. Upgrades to the existing e-pass digital ID are also underway to address public concerns and improve functionality.

Ahead of local council elections early next year, the administration aims to ensure that all government services can be accessed remotely from any island, further supporting digital inclusion across the country.
