The Maldives were set to participate in the 47th session of the UPR working group yesterday at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. This two-week session is set to run until 15 November and will involve a review of human rights records for fourteen countries, including the Maldives.
The states under review include Albania, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Costa Rica, Côte d’Ivoire, Dominica, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Nicaragua, Norway, Portugal, and Qatar.
The UPR is a State-driven process that allows each UN Member State to declare its progress in fulfilling human rights obligations and commitments. Fellow Member States also offer constructive recommendations on improving human rights implementation. This ongoing process, which began its Fourth Cycle in November 2022, will conclude in 2027. Each country’s review is overseen by a group of three States, known as “troikas,” which serve as rapporteurs.
The Maldives, a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, has been selected to participate in the troika for Qatar’s review.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Maldives delegation to the 47th UPR session will be led by Dr. Salma Rasheed, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the UN Office in Geneva. Counsellor Mr Adam Hamid and Counsellor Uza will accompany her. Aminath Shifaya Ibrahim, Second Secretary Ms. Maryam Fathika Fayaz, and Attaché Mr. Raaidh Saeedh from the Permanent Mission.
In alignment with the Government’s priorities, the Maldives delegation is expected to engage actively and offer constructive recommendations during the session.
