The Maldivian Fishermen’s Lobby has announced that the upcoming ‘Maldives Tuna Race 2025’ will be open to all pole-and-line fishermen across the country.

Scheduled to take place from 5 to 6 December, the event coincides with both the anniversary of the Fishermen’s Lobby and the national Fishermen’s Day. Organisers are aiming to establish the race as an annual fixture, with special prizes to be awarded each year.

The 24-hour competition is intended to promote unity and camaraderie among local fishermen while encouraging the younger generation to take up pole-and-line fishing. According to the Lobby, significant cash prizes are being offered to incentivise participation, with awards based on the total weight of tuna caught during the race period.

The top prize is set at USD 6,485, followed by USD 3,243 for the runner-up, and USD 1,621 for the second runner-up.

Interested fishing vessels must register by 4:00 pm on 10 July. Completed application forms may be submitted to the Lobby’s office or via its official email.

Eligibility is restricted to vessels listed in the National Fishermen’s Register and holding a valid fishing licence.
