Maldivian Economy Set to Improve, Says Saleem
Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) expressed optimism last night regarding the Maldivian economy, assuring that there will be no issues in repaying loans in the coming years.
Speaking at the PNC hub meeting, MP Saleem, a prominent businessman and senior member of the PNC, stated that the government is not facing a shortage of Maldivian Rufiyaa. He acknowledged, however, that the repayment of loans in USD poses a financial challenge.
Saleem criticised the loan practices of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration.
“There has never been a loan in this country’s history that required repayment of MVR 1 billion within a year. Even an ordinary person would not take a loan disproportionate to their monthly income,” Saleem said. “The previous government undertook such serious financial commitments. Even a child understands that MVR 1 billion is two-thirds of the Maldives’ revenue.”
Despite the economic difficulties, MP Saleem expressed confidence that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s government would improve the situation through discussions and careful planning.
Referring to the government’s cost-cutting measures, MP Saleem described them as a reform initiative, assuring the public that they will not face hardships.
“Ordinary citizens in need of services will not be deprived of anything,” he said.
He also urged the public not to believe rumours about the discontinuation of Aasandha, the universal health insurance scheme.
