National flag carrier Maldivian has announced the suspension of its flights to Gaafu Alifu Atoll’s Kooddoo Airport, citing concerns over the deteriorating condition of the runway.
The decision was confirmed by Deputy Managing Director Ali Saleem, who highlighted that damage sustained by two Maldivian aircraft from the runway and apron issues had led to both planes being grounded.
Saleem emphasised that the suspension was necessary to prioritise the safety of both passengers and crew. He assured that the airline aims to resume operations to Kooddoo as soon as runway repairs are completed.
Originally opened in 2012, Kooddoo Airport underwent renovations in 2017 to handle larger aircraft, but the current runway issues have now brought services to a halt.
