The Maldives’ national airline, Maldivian, is planning to replace all Dash-8 aircraft in its fleet with ATR models by 2027, as part of a broader effort to enhance operational efficiency and improve passenger experience.
The airline’s Managing Director, Ibrahim Iyas, announced the plan during a ceremony held to mark the arrival of Maldivian’s fifth ATR aircraft. He explained that the decision to shift to ATRs was driven by rising maintenance costs and increased downtime associated with the Dash-8 fleet.
The most recent addition to the fleet is a 46-seat ATR 42-600, joining four other ATR aircraft acquired since January 2023. Maldivian expects to continue phasing in new ATRs over the coming years, aiming for a complete transition within two years.
According to Iyas, the introduction of ATR aircraft has already led to significant improvements in technical reliability and on-time performance. The modern cabins are also expected to enhance the overall passenger experience.
Maldivian currently operates a fleet of 25 aircraft, comprising a wide-body Airbus A330, a narrow-body Airbus A320, four ATRs, nine Dash-8s, and 11 Dash-6 Twin Otter aircraft used for domestic operations and short-haul flights.
The fleet expansion forms part of the government’s wider strategy to strengthen the national carrier. Plans are underway to add more wide-body aircraft to support international route expansion, aligning with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to develop the country’s aviation sector.
