Maldivian has announced that, together with the Mahaldeeb Foundation and Meegaath Hajj and Umra Group, it will send 3.8 tonnes of essential goods to Sri Lanka to support ongoing disaster-relief efforts.
In a post on X, the national airline said it remains committed to supporting partners who work to assist communities facing crises. “This collaboration reflects our shared intention to contribute where we can, with care and responsibility,” the company said.
In addition to the shipment of essential supplies, Maldivian has donated MVR 100,000 to Sri Lanka’s disaster-relief fund, opened through a state-broadcaster telethon following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah.
According to Sri Lankan media, the Maldives is the largest donor of aid to the country in the aftermath of the cyclone. Maldivian assistance includes USD 50,000 officially handed over by the Government, more than USD 800,000 raised through a national telethon organised by Public Service Media, and significant additional public donations that push total support well past USD 2.4 million.
AFP news reported that more than 1,800 people have died across Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia and Sri Lanka as a result of the cyclone. In Sri Lanka, approximately two million people — around 10 percent of the population — have been affected.
Sri Lankan authorities issued fresh landslide warnings on Sunday for areas already severely impacted by persistent rain. The country’s Disaster Management Centre has reported more than 618 deaths and 209 people missing.
