Male’ City Council has announced the demolition of the walls surrounding Maafannu Saharaa cemetery to create a new parking zone aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in the area’s narrow streets.
Deputy Mayor Mohamed Areesh confirmed that most of the cemetery walls have already been dismantled, and the land has been cleared of graves. The new parking facility is expected to address the persistent problem of blocked roads, particularly those that have hindered the access of emergency vehicles like ambulances.
The council has stated that the new parking area will help reduce the pressure on surrounding streets, improving overall accessibility. Additionally, there are plans to enhance the space by planting trees, creating a shaded and comfortable environment for the public, similar to the design of Central Park.
Areesh, representing Maafannu North West under the People’s National Congress (PNC), also noted that the city is focusing on improving the deteriorating condition of cemetery walls throughout Male’. At Galolhu Saharaa cemetery, similar work is underway, with efforts to clear the area, particularly around the graves of dignitaries. Plans are also in motion to widen the adjacent narrow road.
In addition, the wall of Henveiru Saharaa cemetery, which is in a particularly poor state, is under review. Although the bidding process to select a developer has been completed, a decision has yet to be made regarding whether the wall will be repaired or entirely removed.
