The Male’ City Council has reported a substantial cleanup effort in the Male’ City, with over 42.6 tons of waste collected from the streets yesterday alone.

In an announcement posted on X, the city council detailed the removal and disposal of a total of 42.6 tons of waste from the city’s thoroughfares. The effort involved the collection of waste from various areas, with 35 pickups utilized for the task. These pickups comprised 19 units with a capacity of 350 tons, 6 with a capacity of 1.5 tons, 3 with a capacity of two tons, 7 with a capacity of three tons.

The waste collection drive was prompted by a surge in discarded furniture and household appliances, which had been left on doorsteps and pavements as residents undertook pre-Ramadan cleaning activities. The discarded items ranged from sofas to gas cookers to pots and pans, impeding pedestrian movement in several areas.

Responding to public concern, the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) and the Male’ City Council collaborated on joint efforts to address the issue. WAMCO announced that it would offer complimentary waste collection services from transfer stations until the end of Wednesday. However, it’s important to note that this provision excludes wet waste and construction debris.

Additionally, during this period, the entry fee and disposal charges for vehicles used by the general public to transport waste will be waived, facilitating community participation in the cleanup initiative.
