The Malé City Council has announced plans to procure electric buggies to restart the buggy transport service in suburban Vilimale’, inviting contractors to submit quotations for supply of the vehicles.

Vilimale’, a district of Malé City, is an island where motorised vehicles are banned. The island previously operated a buggy service under a private contractor. However, the city council terminated the contract in 2022, citing breaches, and later introduced a city-council operated electric buggy service in 2023.

The service faced operational difficulties after the 10 buggies procured at the time became damaged and deteriorated, resulting in frequent disruptions to transport services on the island.

The city council issued a procurement announcement yesterday seeking environmentally friendly electric buggies to relaunch a reliable service in Vilimale’.

The council has invited interested contractors to visit the procurement section for information clarification and quotation submission. Information clarification will be held at 10:30am on 26 February at the meeting room of the Malé City Council Hall on Boduthakurufaanu Magu. Quotations must be submitted by 11:30am on 5 March at the same venue.

The council intends to procure at least four 11-seater buggies, three eight-seater buggies and two cargo buggies as part of the initiative to improve public transport services in the area.
