Male’ City Council (MCC) has announced plans to conduct a research study aimed at determining the maximum number of vehicle registrations to be issued within the Greater Male’ Region and the duration for which these vehicles can be utilised.
The Council is currently seeking a qualified body to undertake this assessment, which will include both a study and a survey. Interested parties are invited to submit their applications by 18 July. The opportunity is open to all local companies, partnerships, and private firms, provided they are not suspended in connection with a government procurement.
The comprehensive assessment will consider several key factors: the current population of Male’ City, the number of existing vehicles, the number of roads, and the area of designated parking spaces. Additionally, it will examine the extent of public transportation and the potential for developing additional roads, lanes, and parking areas.
According to the Road Traffic Act, it is the responsibility of the respective council to determine the number of road vehicles to be registered and the period for which they can be used in a specific island, city, or area of the nation. The recent amendment to these rules, made in March, stipulates that the determination of vehicle numbers and usage periods must follow an assessment conducted by the council.
The Act categorises vehicle capacity into four groups: public transport, private vehicles, transportation facilities for commercial purposes, and those used for industrial purposes. Councils have the authority to create subcategories within these groups. While the amendments set a fixed number of vehicles for each category, they also state that the maximum capacity for private vehicles must not exceed 80%.
