President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that Male’ city is set to see the construction of 3,000 new housing units before the end of this year.

Speaking at a rally organised by the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) in Male’ city, President Muizzu highlighted the housing shortage as one of the most significant challenges facing the area. The government is committed to commencing construction on these units within the current year.

This initiative is in addition to 4,000 housing units planned under the Indian Line of Credit and a further 3,000 units proposed by the government. Work on the flats under the line of credit is expected to begin shortly.

President Muizzu emphasised that this project represents one of his major pledges to the people. He also assured that flats constructed by the previous government are being handed over as promised, without any alterations.

The President stressed that the current administration will treat all citizens equally, regardless of the population size of their island.

His announcement comes amid criticism of the launch of his own housing initiatives, with the previous government having faced scrutiny over delays exceeding six years in handing over flats.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu arrived at the PNC rally in Male’ city on 1 October 2025.
