President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced last night that a new fish market will be built in Malé City with grant assistance from the Japanese government.

Speaking at an event at Kalaafaanu School, the President said construction of the market, initially planned during his tenure as Mayor of Malé, had been halted for various reasons. He added that the Japanese government has now agreed to support the project.

“We have already started discussions with them to designate the project as a grant from the Japanese government,” he said, noting that a technical team from Japan will arrive in the Maldives soon to begin work.

The new market will be built on the current site of the local market, in line with the original plan from President Maumoon’s administration when the land was reclaimed. The facility will feature a modern fish market and a vegetable market, forming a mixed-use complex.

President Muizzu also said a new building will be constructed on the current fish market site to provide office space for companies and organisations in the fisheries sector.

The project was initially planned when Muizzu served as mayor, with a four-storey building proposed to house a fish market on the ground floor, a traveler’s market and local market on the next three floors, and a food court on the top floor. A parking area was to be included in the basement. The project was delayed after the Ministry of Planning did not approve Malé’s land use plan at the time.
