Male’ Ravvehinge Jamiyyaa has submitted a letter to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Thursday requesting that the land plots awarded in Giraavaru through the Binveriyaa scheme not be relocated to Rasmale’ or Uthuruthilafalhu.
In a video posted on the association’s Meta page, the association’s president, Ibrahim Shiyaz, referred to comments made by the Minister of Construction, Housing, and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib, who said the government was considering shifting over 600 plots to Rasmale’ or Uthuruthilafalhu. Shiyaz noted that applicants had originally sought land in Hulhumale’, Giraavaru Falhu, and Gulhifalhu, and said the proposed relocation was not acceptable to beneficiaries. He urged the President to reconsider the plan, adding that shifts within Hulhumale’ or Gulhifalhu would be acceptable alternatives if relocation was necessary.
The request follows Muththalib’s statement on 12 October during a press conference, regarding the current land-use plan. He explained that the previous administration had planned to allocate 5,186 plots in Giraavaru under the Binveriyaa Scheme. However, the current administration revised the plan to make the island more liveable, relocating 1,114 plots to Gulhifalhu. As a result, 4,072 plots could still be accommodated in Giraavaru, but 610 plots could not be fitted.
“Even with the densest possible plan for Giraavaru, there are still 610 plots we cannot allocate from there,” Muththalib said.
He added that the government was exploring options to address this, including relocating the plots to Rasmale’, Uthuruthilafalhu, or expanding the reclamation area around Gulhifalhu.
