Malé Road Redevelopment Project to Begin Mid-Next Year Amid Preparation Delays
The Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib has announced that physical work on the project to redevelop all roads in the Maldivian capital, Malé, is now expected to begin by mid-2025.
The government-led initiative, announced with plans to be funded through a grant, was originally slated to commence this year.
Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office yesterday, Minister Muthalib explained the factors contributing to the delay, citing specific processes required by the Chinese government, which is providing support for the project. These requirements include a formal proposal submission by the Maldivian government, approval from the Chinese authorities, feasibility studies, and a comprehensive tendering process.
In line with these steps, a Chinese delegation is scheduled to visit the Maldives on November 4 to conduct a feasibility study on the road development project. The team’s 20-day assessment is expected to provide critical insights that will inform project planning and timelines.
Minister Muthalib further emphasised that the redevelopment will be carefully managed to minimise disruptions to Malé’s residents. While aiming for efficiency, he acknowledged the unpredictability of the timeline, noting that the government prioritises quality and community considerations over rapid completion.
In the meantime, efforts are underway to install a temporary storm drainage system, addressing the flooding that frequently occurs during rainy days in Malé. The interim solution is intended to improve conditions for residents while the broader redevelopment work progresses.
