Male’ Waste Transfer Station has been officially handed over to Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) in a bid to tackle waste management challenges sustainably.

The state-of-the-art facility, designed to accommodate over 300 vehicles per hour, comes to fruition under the Greater Male’ Environmental Improvement and Waste Management project, funded by the government in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), with a budget of USD 11.9 million.

The handover ceremony, a pivotal moment in the country’s waste management efforts, saw the signing of the agreement by Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim and WAMCO’s Managing Director, Mujuthaba Jaleel. Notable dignitaries, including the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, Takeuchi Midori, graced the occasion.

Minister Thoriq, addressing attendees, underscored the significance of the station’s inauguration, marking a substantial stride towards a lasting solution to waste management issues. He highlighted the station’s capability to accommodate a high volume of vehicles and reiterated the government’s dedication to supporting WAMCO in enhancing its services.

As part of the project’s roadmap, additional waste management facilities, including the Magu Saafu Raaje initiative outlined in the Week-14 roadmap, will be established. The collaboration between the Department of Waste Management and Pollution Control Department of the ministry and WAMCO will oversee the operation of the newly erected six-story Male’ Waste Transfer Station. Adhering to ADB safeguard regulations and standards, the building ensures environmentally friendly waste removal processes.

The Waste Transfer Station boasts various features, including a roof deck for WAMCO vehicle parking, operational zones for waste removal, a maintenance garage, and a customer service front office. These enhancements aim to bolster WAMCO’s service capacity and streamline waste management operations.
