A 60-year-old man from Gaafu Alifu Atoll Villingili has been arrested in Malé for allegedly deliberately crashing a pickup into a motorcycle.
Police said the suspect was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the incident. Following his arrest, he was presented before the court for a remand hearing and was ordered to be held in custody for five days. His remand period is set to expire on 10 March.
Authorities have accused the man of dangerous driving that resulted in a traffic collision. According to the court’s remand order, the suspect suddenly swerved his pickup into the motorcycle lane and intentionally struck a motorcycle.
The order, citing the investigating officer, stated that the motorcyclist sustained injuries as a result of the crash.
Dangerous driving is strictly prohibited under Maldivian law and carries serious penalties. Article 62 of the Land Transport Act requires all individuals operating land vehicles to ensure road safety and to drive in a manner that does not endanger others.
Driving in a way that threatens lives or property is considered a criminal offence. Authorities have the power to suspend or revoke driving licences, impound vehicles for a specified period and impose fines in accordance with the law.
Police also noted that several traffic-related incidents have been reported since the start of Ramadan. In one recent case, a pickup driver was penalised for blocking an emergency ambulance while unloading goods, with authorities confirming that appropriate action had been taken.
