Arrested Drug Traffickers Lived Lavishly Despite Being Unemployed
The Maldives Police Service has made progress in dismantling a drug trafficking and money laundering network centred on Fuvahmulah Island. Locals have expressed surprise at the luxurious lifestyles of those arrested, despite their apparent lack of employment.
As part of the ongoing ‘Operation Veshi Rakkal’, which began on 14th January, 58 individuals have been arrested, and investigations have been launched into 75 cases. Police have forwarded 65 of these cases for prosecution.

Among the arrests were Ahmed Niushad, aged 34, and Hassan Azim, aged 29, both from Fuvahmulah. Police revealed that over MVR 21 million passed through Niushad’s bank account in the past five years, with an additional MVR seven million recorded over the past two years.
Locals reported that the suspects’ opulent lifestyles raised suspicions. Despite being unemployed, they frequently imported expensive cars, often replacing them within a month. Some locals speculated that these vehicles were used to smuggle drugs. Associates of the arrested individuals recently opened two cafés on the island, further fuelling suspicions.

Both Niushad and Azim have prior criminal records. Azim was previously charged with group violence in Fuvahmulah in 2016 but was acquitted. Niushad has also faced multiple arrests in the past.
Residents alleged that the pair had been involved in drug trafficking for years, with their extravagant lifestyles serving as a possible indicator. Police acted on long-standing allegations, culminating in their arrest as part of the broader crackdown on the network.
