Police have arrested a man suspected of masterminding scams on Facebook Marketplace.
Nadeef Mohamed, 36, from Rankokage, Gaafu Alifu Atoll, Gemanafushi, was arrested on 11 February under a court order in connection with the case. Officers recovered cash cards, SIM cards, mobile phones, Maldivian rufiyaa, and US dollars from his possession.
Police allege that Nadeef fraudulently obtained money by advertising goods for sale on Facebook and instructing victims to deposit payments into third-party bank accounts. Authorities also suspect him of planning similar scams and collecting funds generated through organised scam networks.
The Criminal Court has remanded him in custody for five days.
Police stated that efforts are ongoing to identify other individuals involved in the alleged money laundering operations linked to the scam networks. The Anti-Scam Centre is leading the investigation.
