The Criminal Court has issued sentences in two separate theft cases, fining one man for stealing pipes from a mortuary and jailing another for stealing mangoes from a private residence.
In the first case, the court ruled on Tuesday that a man who stole copper pipes from a compressor installed at the Galolhu Mortuary must pay a fine of MVR 10,800.
According to the court, police checked the man on the evening of 21 June last year, when he admitted to having copper pipes in his possession. Investigations found that the pipes had been taken from compressors attached to the outside of a container at the Galolhu Mortuary. The man also pleaded guilty in court.
The prosecution charged him with unauthorised possession of another person’s property. The court ordered that the fine be paid within four months.
In a separate ruling delivered on Sunday, the Criminal Court sentenced a man to four months and 24 days in prison for stealing 127 mangoes from a tree at a house on Lily Magu.
The defendant, Mohammed Naseer of Hiyalee, K. Dhiffushi, pleaded guilty to the charge of theft. Following his admission, the court handed down a custodial sentence.
