Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for Diamorphine Trafficking

The Criminal Court has also sentenced Hassan Sifah to life imprisonment after police discovered diamorphine, commonly known as heroin, in a cigarette pack he discarded during a traffic stop.

Sifah, from City Villa in K. Male’, faced charges of trafficking diamorphine following the incident on 7 February 2022. During a routine stop for a motorcycle missing a rearview mirror near the Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) building, police reported that Sifah, a passenger on the motorcycle, threw away a cigarette pack and fled the scene.

Upon inspection, the discarded pack was found to contain 95 packets of diamorphine, totalling 9.3124 grams. Despite Sifah’s denial of any involvement with the cigarette pack, the court found him guilty of trafficking.

The court imposed a life sentence of 25 years in prison and a fine of MVR 100,000, which must be paid within 12 months. Considering the time Sifah has already spent in detention, he has 24 years and 11 months remaining to serve.
