Man Sentenced to 54 Years for Child Sexual Abuse

A 51-year-old Maldivian man has been sentenced to 54 years in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting a child. The sentence was handed down by the Criminal Court yesterday.

The man was found guilty of repeatedly raping a young girl and coercing her into performing sexual acts over a period of time while in a position of trust. He was arrested on September 3, 2022, in Hulhumale’, and following an investigation, the case was forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office on October 18, 2022.

Having already spent three years in prison awaiting trial, he will now serve a total of 51 years in prison, which will extend into his old age. At the time the sentence is completed, he will be 102 years old.
