The Criminal Court has sentenced a man to prison for stealing a motorbike from the basement of Hiyaa Tower 11 in Hulhumalé Phase II.
The individual convicted is Mohamed Shafeeu, Thoonu Filige, from S. Hithadhoo, who has a prior criminal record for similar offences. He was sentenced last week to one year and 12 months in prison. After deducting the time already spent in custody, he will serve 11 months and 26 days.
The prosecution charged Shafeeu with unlawfully exerting power over another person’s property in relation to the theft, which took place in June this year. The stolen motorbike, belonging to a resident of Laamu Atoll, was found in Malé three days later, in Shafeeu’s possession.
During the trial, Shafeeu admitted to stealing the motorbike. However, at an earlier remand hearing, he claimed the vehicle had been lent to him by a friend, though he was unable to provide a name or contact details when questioned. A police investigation officer also testified that Shafeeu failed to substantiate this claim.
According to court records, Shafeeu spent 15 days in custody during the investigation into the theft.
