The Maldives Police has revealed that, in coordination with relevant authorities, an investigation is underway into the mass deaths of ducks and fish at a popular public park in the Hulhudhoo of Addu City.
The duck park, opened two years ago, is a well-known attraction featuring birdhouses that draw flocks of ducks, pigeons, and other birds, as well as a pond populated with colourful fish. The park is frequented daily by residents and tourists alike.
Reports of the incident surfaced on social media yesterday after photos showing dead ducks and fish at the park were shared online. The post alleged that the animals may have been deliberately poisoned.
According to the Addu City Council, they became aware of the deaths on Thursday. He said the situation initially involved ducks but has since extended to the fish population in the park’s pond.
Addu City Council member Hussain Faiz-uh Rahman stated to the local media that the council became aware of the deaths on Thursday. He said the situation initially involved ducks but has since extended to the fish population in the park’s pond.
The council further stated that it is considering the installation of CCTV cameras to strengthen security and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Authorities have yet to determine whether the incident was the result of deliberate harm or environmental factors.
