A mass inspection has been launched by the government to ensure the safety of food items sold in shops and markets ahead of the upcoming Ramadan month.
The inspection, which began today at 9:00 am, is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Health, the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA), and the Health Protection Agency (HPA). It is set to run until 4:00 pm. The primary aim of this initiative is to verify that food sold, stored, and handled in shops and markets meets the health and safety requirements outlined in the Food Safety Act (6/2024) and its accompanying standards.

The inspection process will focus on several key areas, including pest control measures to prevent animals such as cats and rats from entering food premises. Inspectors will also review the storage of food items on racks, shelves, and in refrigerators, ensuring that proper temperature guidelines, as per product labels, are followed. In addition, expired food products will be identified and removed, while the overall packaging, labelling, and storage conditions will be thoroughly checked to ensure they comply with safety regulations.
The Food Safety Act, which was passed by the President on 23 May 2024 and came into force on 23 August 2024, has been a critical step in strengthening food safety in the Maldives. As part of its ongoing efforts, the MFDA has been working diligently to ensure that all food service establishments are registered under the Act and adhere to its procedures. The MFDA has also launched programs across the country to educate food producers and sellers about food safety standards.
