The Maldives Air Traffic Controllers Association (MATCA) has expressed condolences following the tragic Air Canada crash at LaGuardia Airport, New York, while highlighting concerns over working conditions for air traffic controllers in the Maldives.
The Sunday incident, in which an Air Canada plane collided with a fire truck during landing, killed both pilots and injured dozens, CNN reported. Over 43 passengers and crew were hospitalised, with many later released. One flight attendant survived while still strapped to her seat, and the two firefighters involved are expected to recover.
In a statement, MATCA said the crash “underscores the growing operational strain on aviation personnel and the risks associated with staffing shortages and fatigue.” The association noted that Maldivian airports face similar pressures, with insufficient staffing, extended hours, and compressed, irregular schedules contributing to fatigue and increasing operational complexity.
MATCA called for urgent recruitment and retention measures, the implementation of fatigue risk management systems, and a review of duty rosters. The association emphasised that air traffic controllers remain committed to safety, but stressed that adequate staffing and sustainable working conditions are essential to prevent accidents.
“Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all those affected,” MATCA said, urging authorities to prioritise institutional accountability and support for frontline controllers.
