The Maldives Bureau of Statistics (MBS) has announced a roadmap to digitalise future census activities in the country.

The initiative aims to enhance the quality of census data while reducing long-term costs. MBS has launched efforts to transition future censuses to a digital format, with a hybrid approach planned as relevant population registers are developed. As the registers expand, door-to-door data collection will be supplemented by alternative sources to ensure accurate and comprehensive census information.

To support this transition, MBS is conducting an assessment and preparing a detailed roadmap outlining the steps to implement a hybrid census system. The plan is part of a broader strategy to advance the long-term vision of the Maldives’ statistical sector.

In collaboration with state statistical agencies, MBS has formulated a sectoral plan covering 2025 to 2027. Additionally, the National Strategy for the Development of Gender Statistics (NSDSGS) has been prepared in partnership with Paris 21 to strengthen gender-related data.

These initiatives are expected to reinforce the Maldives’ statistical system, enabling it to meet international standards and conduct censuses in a cost-effective and technologically advanced manner.
