The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), a minority opposition party, has accused the government of including names in the newly published list of eligible applicants for the Gedhoruveriyaa housing scheme that were not part of the original list of 4,000 compiled by the former MDP administration.
The current government reviewed the previous administration’s list and issued a revised version on 27 February. According to the updated list, only 1,820 applicants were deemed eligible. Among them, 1,423 qualified for three-bedroom apartments, while 397 were eligible for two-bedroom units.
In a press conference held yesterday to address concerns over the revised list, MDP Vice Chairperson Ibrahim Waheed alleged that 577 new names had been added, despite the government claiming to have only reviewed the original 4,000 applicants. He also stated that the marks for 56 individuals had been altered and increased.
The Housing Ministry, however, clarified that the verification process was conducted only for applicants who scored 75 points for three-bedroom apartments and 73 points for two-bedroom apartments. While those scoring 75 points would have to participate in a draw, the ministry explained that names had been included as part of the verification process. The ministry also stated that no applicants who scored below 75 points were considered.
Akram Kamaluddin, the State Minister for Housing under the previous MDP government and the most senior member of the flat committee, accused the current administration of compiling the list to include individuals they wished to allocate flats to. He described this as a direct violation of people’s rights and urged MDP to advocate for those affected.
MDP has announced that it will begin accepting complaints regarding the revised list from tomorrow night onwards. Complaints can be submitted in person at Dhandikoshi Haruge on Chaanadhanee Magu between 9:15 pm and 11:30 pm.
