The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the main opposition party, has levelled serious accusations against the government, alleging an attempt to mislead the public while impeding press freedom.

In a statement issued on Friday to mark World Press Freedom Day, the MDP criticised the government’s actions, asserting that despite claims of transparency, it has hindered the press from performing its duty.

The party specifically highlighted recent changes in policies at the President’s Office, including the prohibition of journalists from carrying mobile phones during press conferences, which it deems unacceptable.

MDP expressed concern over reported threats against local media outlets, urging authorities to thoroughly investigate these incidents and take swift action. Despite these challenges, the party commended the resilience of journalists and extended gratitude for their dedication to informing the public.

Emphasising the importance of unrestricted press freedom, MDP called upon the government to uphold this fundamental right. The party claimed to have championed efforts to safeguard press freedom during its administrations and reiterated its commitment to this cause.

However, recent developments have seen the Maldives’ ranking in the World Press Freedom Index decline by six places, with the nation now positioned 106th. Reporters Without Borders (RSF), which compiles the index, attributed this decline to legislative measures enacted during the previous administration, led by the MDP.

The enactment of the Evidence Bill, which includes provisions allowing courts to compel journalists to reveal their sources in certain circumstances, was cited as a significant factor contributing to this decline.
