The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has condemned the actions of Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, accusing him of attempting to hinder a motion of no confidence in his position.
The MDP alleges that these actions contravene the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure governing the Parliament.

The Speaker of Parliament holds a position, reliant on the support and confidence of fellow members of the Parliament. The MDP asserts that this role should be occupied by an individual who upholds democratic principles and is willing to confront a vote of no confidence.
MDP maintains that the Speaker, lacking the confidence of his peers, should consider resigning. However, the situation has taken a different turn, with the Speaker seemingly deviating from democratic norms.
At a time when a new presidential term is about to commence, the MDP stated that it is determined to ensure that parliamentary proceedings adhere to the Constitution. This commitment is in line with the upcoming swearing-in ceremony of the President-elect and Vice-President, aiming to prevent any legal ambiguities.
The Constitution and the Rules of Procedure of the Republic of Maldives serve as the foundation for the proper functioning of the nation’s legislative branch, emphasising the importance of continuous parliamentary operation.
These rules are designed to prevent any single party from unduly influencing legislative power, as the Parliament represents the elected representatives of the people.
MDP stated that it calls for the no-confidence motion against the Speaker of Parliament to be conducted in strict accordance with the Constitution, the Rules of Procedure, and established democratic principles. The party emphasises the need for a transparent and lawful process in addressing this issue within the framework of the country’s democratic institutions.
