The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has condemned the alleged violation of privacy of two of its female members and called for an immediate and transparent investigation by the Maldives Police Service (MPS).

In a press release published today, the party said it stands with its members, Fathimath Zahiyya, Chairperson of Hulhumale’ North Constituency, and Aishath Shiman Ahmed of the MDP Youth Wing, and urged authorities to take action against those responsible.

According to the party, both members had their phones seized in recent days by the MPS in connection with politically related activities. The MDP stated that private images and videos from the devices were subsequently leaked online via anonymous accounts on the social media platform X.

The party said Zahiyya’s phone was confiscated on 7 October while she was taking her child to school, following a post on Facebook. Shiman’s phone was taken on 8 October outside her residence, and she said the leaked image depicted her as a minor. The MDP highlighted that the images were only stored on the devices, which were in police custody.

The party has lodged complaints with the National Integrity Commission, the People’s Majlis, and the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, calling for a prompt and fair investigation into the incidents.

“The Maldivian Democratic Party demands that action be taken against the perpetrators within the Maldives Police Service immediately, and that a transparent and fair investigation be conducted,” the press release said. The party added that Zahiyya and Shiman have shown resilience and courage in continuing their political work despite the incidents.
