The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has invited members to express their interest in contesting next year’s local council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections on the party’s ticket.
The party announced on Thursday that members can submit their applications until 14:00 on Tuesday, 30 September. Only those who formally express their interest will be eligible to compete in the party’s primary, the date of which will be announced later.
To qualify for MDP’s ticket, applicants must be registered members of the party and meet all requirements set for candidates in the local council and WDC elections. In addition, candidates are required to submit the necessary forms along with criminal and debt clearance records from the Department of Judicial Administration.
MDP currently has 43,675 registered members, making it the country’s largest opposition party. Following its losses in the most recent presidential and parliamentary elections, the party has been preparing to strengthen its performance in the upcoming local council polls.
