The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) parliamentary group has declared its decision not to file complaints against Members of Parliament (MPs) accused of accepting bribes to join the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).
In a press conference held yesterday, Deputy Leader of the parliamentary group MP Hussain Shaheem emphasised that the relationship with the departing MPs persists despite their exit from the MDP.
Hussain had previously levelled accusations against the ruling party, asserting that bribes were offered to the MPs.
In response to inquiries about whether MDP plans to involve the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), MP Ali Niyaz indicated that such discussions had not taken place within the parliamentary group.
Niyaz explained that the decision not to approach the ACC is rooted in respecting the voters who elected the MPs for a five-year term. However, he acknowledged the upcoming parliamentary elections, stating that the electorate would ultimately determine how to address the actions of the MPs in question.
