Preliminary results from today’s local council elections indicate that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is projected to win all mayoral seats in the Maldives.
Early counts show MDP candidates, all incumbents in their respective cities, leading in the mayoral races. In Malé City, Mayor Adam Azim is ahead, while Mohamed Athif leads in Kulhudhuffushi City and Ali Nizar holds the lead in Addu City. In Fuvahmulah City, Mayor Ismail Rafeeq is currently ahead, and in Thinadhoo, Mayor Saud Ali is also projected to retain his seat.
MDP leadership have begun congratulating their mayoral candidates. Former President Mohamed Nasheed said the results demonstrate that the party has secured victories on multiple fronts, “defeating” the government by winning the mayoral seats, securing control of most islands’ council seats, and achieving a referendum outcome contrary to the government’s position.

Other candidates in Malé City include Moosa Ali Jaleel of the People’s National Congress, independents Ahmed Aiham Mohamed and Ismail Zariyand, and Abdulla Mahzoom Majid of the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA). In Kulhudhuffushi, Ibrahim Hassan contested for PNC, while in Addu City, Mohamed Ahsam ran as an independent and Mushrif Ali represented PNC. In Fuvahmulah City, Ali Maseeh ran for PNC, and in Thinadhoo, PNC candidate Mohamed Ajeeb contested the mayoral seat.
In the Maldives, mayoral positions are limited to cities, while administrative islands are led by Island Council Presidents.
