The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has published the permanent list of candidates contesting in its primary elections for the upcoming local council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) polls.

According to the party, the primary will be held in 42 constituencies, with 48 candidates contesting in city constituencies and 100 candidates vying for seats in island constituencies. The list includes candidates seeking the party’s ticket for both local council and WDC positions.

MDP had recently announced that they will hold the vote on 30 December. However, according to the official timeline on the party’s website, voting day will be on 16 January. According to the timeline, the party will release details of the voting stations and time on 10 January.

Previously, MDP had announced plans to conduct primaries in 58 constituencies nationwide. However, the current confirmed list reflects candidates contesting in 42 constituencies where primaries will be held.

As the party moves forward with its preparations, attention remains on the closely watched contest for MDP’s mayoral candidacy in Malé City. The race is expected to be fought between incumbent mayor Adam Azim and former Central Henveyru MP Ali Azim.

The primaries come at a time of renewed unity within the party leadership, following the recent reconciliation between former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) and former president Mohamed Nasheed (Anni), who had fallen out during the MDP primary ahead of the 2023 presidential election.
