The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has expressed concern over the escalating war in the Middle East, highlighting its devastating impact on the region’s population and implications for global stability, including effects on oil markets, tourism, and the Maldivian economy.

In a press release today, MDP criticised the government, saying President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has focused more on centralising power through a rushed constitutional referendum than preparing the country for the economic consequences of rising oil prices.

Last week, the President sought to reassure the public, declaring there was “nothing to worry about” in a press conference. However, just 48 hours later, fuel prices were increased by 20 percent. The party noted the government’s subsequent request for urgent fuel assistance from India further highlights the seriousness of the situation and contradicts the President’s earlier assurances. MDP expressed its gratitude to the government and people of India for their continued support.

The party also noted that while other countries in the region have implemented policies to mitigate the impact of the fuel crisis, the lack of transparency and engagement by the Maldivian government with relevant stakeholders has been concerning.

“The Maldivian people deserve a government that confronts the crises of the day, not one that exploits them to consolidate power,” MDP said.
