MDP Raises Concerns Over Committee Monitoring Housing Schemes Amid Election Fears
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has expressed concerns about the newly formed committee overseeing the ‘Binveriya’ and ‘Gedhoruveriya’ social housing schemes, suggesting it could be politically motivated ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Ahmed Easa, the spokesperson for MDP’s parliamentary election campaign and Kendhikulhudhoo MP, voiced these allegations during a press briefing on Sunday evening. Easa claimed that the formation of the special committee under the Ministry of Housing appeared to be aimed at influencing the elections and criticized the decision for allegedly lacking consultation with the Male’ City Council and the city’s mayor.
Describing the move as “gross misconduct” and “political propaganda”, Easa asserted that such actions could potentially disadvantage citizens in need of social housing. He pledged that MDP would oppose any actions by the current administration that are perceived to be detrimental to the public, even if it meant amending laws to counteract the committee’s decisions.
The government had established the special committee on March 14th to oversee administrative responsibilities related to the social housing schemes. In response, the Male’ City Council formed its own committee to provide counsel to the Ministry of Housing’s committee.
The ‘Binveriya’ scheme, initiated by the previous administration, aimed to provide housing plots to eligible recipients, with over 18,000 deemed eligible for the first phase. However, concerns were raised regarding the allotment process, particularly regarding plots from various locations including Hulhumale’, Gulhifalhu, Giraavarufalhu, and Uthuru Thila Falhu (UTF).
Meanwhile, the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme, which involves the development of 4,000 housing units in Hulhumale’ Phase II by Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC), faced scrutiny from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The ACC identified discrepancies in the points awarded to recipients, casting doubt on the legitimacy of some applications.
In response to these concerns, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced plans to establish a special committee comprising credible individuals to review the points allocation process for Gedhoruveriya scheme applicants.
The government has yet to respond directly to MDP’s allegations, and the situation remains under scrutiny as the parliamentary elections draw nearer.
