MDP Sweeps WDC Presidencies Across All Five Cities

Candidates from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have secured all five Women’s Development Committee (WDC) presidencies in the country’s cities, according to results from the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM).
The opposition party won WDC leadership posts in Malé, Thinadhoo, Fuvahmulah, Addu City and Kulhudhuffushi, consolidating its control at the city level.
According to provisional results published by the ECM, Kulhudhuffushi’s Aminath Ibrahim secured a decisive win with 63.46 percent of the vote. In Malé, Aishath Reesha won the WDC presidency with 52.22 percent, defeating Ashiyath Alaika Adhnan of the PNC, who received 41.24 percent, and Mariyam Shimaza of the Adhaalath Party, who polled 6.55 percent.
In Thinadhoo, Mariyam Sharoona Adil won with 49.85 percent, while in Addu City, Fathimath Hijra secured one of the largest margins of the night with 75.96 percent of the vote. In Fuvahmulah, Mariyam Shiuna won with 56.7 percent.
The WDC victories come alongside strong results for MDP candidates in mayoral races, with all incumbents in the five cities retaining their seats. In Malé, Mayor Adam Azim secured re-election, while Mohamed Athif won in Kulhudhuffushi City and Ali Nizar retained the mayoralty in Addu City. In Fuvahmulah City, Mayor Ismail Rafeeq was re-elected, and in Thinadhoo, Mayor Saud Ali also held onto his position.
