The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is holding a gathering tonight at Artificial Beach to celebrate its success in the recent nationwide local council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections.

The event, titled “Heyvalla Thayyaaru”, is scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m., with party officials inviting citizens to join in celebrating the victory and expressing their support for the opposition.

Preliminary results from Saturday’s elections indicate a strong performance by the MDP. Preliminary results by the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) show that the party has won all mayoral seats across the cities, while voters rejected the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution proposed by the government. MDP candidates have also secured all five WDC presidencies in the country’s cities, as well as the majority seats in the committees, consolidating the party’s influence at the city level.

While the celebration in Malé is set for tonight, cities across the country have already held events to celebrate the win for MDP, including a motorcycle parade in Kulhudhuddushi and a party gathering in Addu.

Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih congratulated the MDP candidates on their success, noting that voters had rejected the policies of the current administration and urging the government to heed public sentiment. In a post on X, Solih extended his congratulations to elected mayors, council presidents, WDC presidents, and all other winning candidates, while thanking citizens who supported MDP candidates across the three nationwide elections.
