The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is set to convene a national council meeting at AA. Ukulhas tonight, with key leadership figures, including Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Aslam, in attendance.
The meeting, on the agenda for discussions, is to address the party’s future trajectory, as highlighted by MDP’s Deputy Chairperson Ibrahim Waheed (Iburey).
Notably, former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will be absent from the gathering. Following the conclusion of his presidential term last Friday, he relinquished the role of the party’s most senior leader, a title accorded to him upon his election to the parliament as per the party’s constitution.
The current meeting marks a pivotal moment for MDP as it grapples with vacant leadership positions. Former party leader and ex-president Mohamed Nasheed, along with former deputy leader Mohamed Shifaz, departed the party earlier this year, creating vacancies that remain unfulfilled.
In the wake of their loss in the presidential election, MDP’s last national council meeting on October 3rd deliberated on critical matters, including a resolution proposed by Nasheed’s new party, The Democrats.
The resolution sought to transition the governing system to a parliamentary model. However, the council, at that time, opted to uphold the existing presidential system.
