The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has accused the current administration of infringing on citizens’ housing rights and announced plans to hold a major rally on 31 October.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday, MP for Kendhoo constituency Mauroof Zakir said the rally would focus specifically on housing issues. He noted that this event, separate from the party’s larger rally planned for 17 November, aims to provide residents of Malé and nearby areas a platform to voice their concerns over housing difficulties.
The rally, titled “Koba Koba Magey Goathi, Koba Koba Magey Flat” — translated as “Where is my land, where is my flat” — will take place at the Malé Carnival area. Mauroof urged all Maldivians facing housing challenges to participate.
Earlier this month, on 3 October, the MDP held a rally in Malé which escalated into confrontations between demonstrators and the police. Eight protesters were detained for 15 days before being conditionally released by the Criminal Court on 19 October.
The party has also announced plans for a larger rally on 17 November.
