The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has introduced a policy framework aimed at fostering a secure community through crime prevention strategies.
Presented during a campaign event in AA. Ukulhas, the dedicated section of the MDP manifesto highlights a range of key aspects pertaining to the establishment of a secure environment.
This section is carefully organised into subsections that delve into monitoring, preventive measures, and responsive strategies, all designed to effectively address various dimensions of criminal activity.
One of the central tenets of the manifesto is to bolster the capabilities of security services while concurrently implementing tactics to discourage minors and young individuals from engaging in unlawful behaviours.
The proposed measures include leveraging educational institutions to raise awareness about the consequences of delinquency and collaborating across governmental bodies to effectively combat emerging forms of criminality, including youth violence, financial fraud, cybercrime, and fraudulent calls.
A core emphasis of the policy framework is the utilisation of child protection mechanisms and a family-centered approach to assist those who may be particularly susceptible to criminal influences.
Moreover, the manifesto advocates for the establishment of a Crime Prevention Council, aimed at enhancing the coordination and cooperation among various agencies involved in maintaining law and order.
Further strategies encompass initiatives such as the Targeted Intervention and Support Mechanism, which seeks to identify individuals at risk of gang involvement and provide them with appropriate assistance through counseling and vocational training. The document also underscores the importance of revisiting the legal and enforcement framework to ensure alignment with the contemporary context of the Maldives.
In addition to these measures, the manifesto outlines plans to implement citywide surveillance systems across major urban areas, thereby contributing to a reduction in criminal activities.
The introduction of unmanned surveillance devices like drones to monitor drug trafficking is also part of the proposed strategies. Embracing technological advancements, the policy framework suggests employing technology for effective traffic enforcement within densely populated regions.
