The Democrats’ parliamentary group leader and Central Henveiru MP, Ali Azim, has stated that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is destined for yet another setback in their bid to oust Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed from his office.

Azim labelled the MDP’s motion of no-confidence against Nasheed as a “playful issue,” asserting that the party would encounter strict opposition to its aspirations.

Azim emphasised that the MDP’s desires would not be given free rein.

It is worth noting that the no-confidence motion against Nasheed is set to take place tomorrow. The released schedule from the Parliament Office indicates that the sole item listed for tomorrow’s session is the decision on the motion of no-confidence against Nasheed.

Azim drew attention to the MDP’s defeat in the presidential election and forecasted a similar outcome in their attempt to remove Nasheed from his position. He expressed his belief that the largest political party in the Maldives has faced a significant decline in the past five years, failing to live up to the expectations of the public despite holding considerable state power.

Furthermore, Azim insinuated that the MDP’s efforts to remove Nasheed might be an endeavor to console President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih following his defeat in the presidential election.

Notably, the MDP has declared its intention to suspend parliamentary activities until the matter concerning Nasheed’s removal is settled. Additionally, he stated that MDP has indicated its refusal to recognise the inauguration of President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu while Nasheed remains in the position of speaker.
