Measles Case Confirmed in the Maldives
A man in the country has tested positive for measles, a disease that had previously been eradicated from the country.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) reported that the case was recorded on Tuesday and is believed to be an imported case.
Close to midnight, on 20 July, migrant workers are playing football in a pitch as toxic smoke from the island's waste disposal site floats over them. Fortunately, the individual had already received two doses of the measles vaccine, and his condition is showing signs of improvement, according to the HPA.
HPA said that given the communicable nature of measles, they are diligently conducting contact tracing. The affected individual has provided information about his recent travel during the transmission period, allowing health authorities to identify and notify those he may have come into contact with, be it at home or in the hospital.
The HPA stated that individuals who have not yet received their measles vaccine will be vaccinated as a preventive measure.
Symptoms of measles include coughing, the appearance of red spots on the skin, a runny nose, and redness of the eyes. If any of these symptoms are observed, it is advised to seek immediate advice from a health worker.
It is worth noting that the Maldives had eradicated measles in 2018. However, there have been a handful of cases since then. Most recently, a child tested positive for measles in Addu City in April this year.
