The Maldives Media Council (MMC) has threatened to take regulatory action against unregistered news websites disseminating fake news, naming 3 particular entities: kurusee.com, dhonamaa.com and dhiyavaru.com.

In a press release shared today on the social media platform X, the council revealed that they had received many complaints against these three unregistered websites disseminating false and misleading information.

According to MMC, an investigation into the complaints found evidence of kurusee.com, dhonamaa.com and dhiyavaru.com purposefully circulating misinformation.

The council further condemned the circulation of unverified and disproven information, emphasising that the proliferation of misinformation has led to negative social impacts and wide-spread misinformation about important social issues.

Highlighting that monitoring unregistered websites falls within MMC’s mandate as per Article 36 of the Maldives Media Council Act, the council revealed their decision to establish a framework to regulate unregistered websites in collaboration with relevant stakeholders and government authorities.
