MET Attributes Low Air Quality in Malé to Seasonal Wind Changes

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) said the low air quality observed around Malé today is caused by the mixing of wind currents as seasonal wind patterns shift.
Meteorologist Hussain Waheed said reduced visibility is typical at this time of year as the South-West monsoon weakens and the North-East monsoon begins, bringing a change in wind direction from north to north-east. He noted, however, that visibility has not deteriorated as severely as it did last year.
According to IQAir, a Swiss-based air quality monitoring organisation, Malé recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 104 at 12:00 p.m. today, placing it in the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” category. This category covers AQI readings between 101 and 150. IQAir uses six classifications: good, moderate, unhealthy for sensitive groups, unhealthy, very unhealthy, and hazardous.
The IQAir website recommends people in sensitive groups to reduce outdoor exercise and keep windows closed to limit exposure to polluted air during periods of low air quality. People in sensitive groups, including those with respiratory or heart conditions, young children, and the elderly, are encouraged to wear a mask if they need to go outside. Using an air purifier indoors can also help maintain cleaner air and reduce the impact of airborne pollutants, IQAir noted.
