Maldives Meteorological Services (MET) has revealed that climate forecasts indicate March is expected to bring below-normal rainfall to most parts of the Maldives, with temperatures projected to remain slightly above average across the country.

Based on the latest climate model outputs, prevailing large-scale climate drivers and national climate data, MET office has shared that the northern atolls are forecast to experience normal to below-normal rainfall. The central and southern atolls are likely to receive below-normal rainfall during the month. Both maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to remain slightly above normal nationwide.

MET further said that climate indicators show that the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is currently in a La Niña phase, with models suggesting a transition to ENSO-neutral conditions between February and April.

ENSO is a climate pattern in the Pacific Ocean that affects weather globally. It has three main phases: El Niño, La Niña, and ENSO-neutral. Right now, ENSO is in a La Niña phase which usually brings cooler ocean temperatures in the Pacific and can affect rainfall and storms in places like the Maldives.MET office said that authorities are continuing to monitor evolving climate conditions as part of ongoing seasonal forecasting and weather assessment efforts.
