MFDA Strengthens Oversight on Imported Baby Bottles

MV+ News Desk | February 3, 2024

The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has taken action regarding imported baby feeding bottles and their accompanying silicone nipples, mandating their registration with the regulatory body.

In an announcement made on Thursday, the MFDA underscored that breast milk alternatives and associated apparatus must undergo registration on the agency’s portal before being imported into the Maldives.

Despite the existence of this requirement since 2015, the MFDA noted a discrepancy in adherence to regulations governing the importation, production, and commercial distribution of breast milk alternative products.

Specifically, the regulations stipulate that items such as bottles and nipples must be registered. However, the MFDA observed a lack of compliance in this regard.

In response, the MFDA has issued a directive calling upon all entities involved in the importation of baby bottles and nipples to commence registration with the agency. The deadline for compliance has been set for 31 July of this year.
